Adoption is a testament to the boundlessness of love. Greg Bruorton’s story of an abandoned baby, Baby Jane, makes this really clear. The family knows no bounds and easily transcends blood. When you adopt, you are intentionally acting according to your heart, open and full of love, and acquire the opportunity to actually make a change in someone else’s life. Adoption is transformative and can be the basis for something as powerful as blood relations. Love does not belong only to those we have blood-kinship with. It comes from something more profound and more universal than blood. While the legalities of adoption may have their difficulties and uncertainties, the light at the end of the tunnel is well worth the struggle. A happy family—one that is truly united by love—is something anyone can reach, provided they have love in their hearts.

The Joyful Journey of Adoption

The decision to adopt does not come easy. It requires many, many months of deliberation and soul-searching. This is especially the case for couples. The prevailing norm is that one of the most fulfilling achievements for a couple is to have their love manifested through pregnancy and having blood-related children. This does not have to be the case. Simply taking care of a child through your whole life and partnership and seeing them become someone who can stand against the world is already a wonderful achievement. And you can do that with or without having to be blood-related with them. Being a parent is not inherent to having been either a sperm or egg donor. Being a parent is simply wanting to provide a loving home for a child. Of course, it’s still a choice that requires very careful consideration.

Whether adopting or not, parenting involves a lifelong commitment and responsibility to be the primary provider for someone—someone who has yet to have the ability to fend for themselves. Adoption is a very powerful thing: reaching out to someone who may—in most likelihood—have never enjoyed the experience of family and letting them feel that it is wonderful, an act truly worthy of one’s humanity.

Family Knows No Bounds

The moment that a child becomes a part of any family is always a cause for celebration. Beyond the joy and the bliss that comes with family, welcoming a child is the first step into what is a lifelong bond. When you adopt, you are signing an invisible contract—aside from the other papers you have to formalize—to be with someone and be there for them throughout your life. Adoption comes from love and creates a bond that’s just as deep and as enriching as any that comes from biological relations. So why not learn more about it? Even if you’re not looking to adopt, simply knowing the ins and outs will surely widen your perspective on what a family can be.

Family Knows No Bounds: Support from Many Places

Of course, as with everything that offers a chance for love and happiness, adoption is not without its challenges. Outside the legalese and the sheaves and sheaves of papers you have to print out, sign, deliver, notarize, and whatnot, adopting isn’t easy. It’s not just choosing a kid that you particularly like and then having them live in your house. That’s the gist of it, sure, but that’s not the whole story. The children you may adopt are more likely to be burdened with a lot of psychological issues, in particular, identity, loss, and attachment. These are almost always the result of becoming an orphan. It’s your job as the parent to assuage these fears and anxieties. Be supportive and always be understanding. These challenges have an end, but you need to be committed to seeing them through it. Adoption is lovely because you are choosing to change someone’s life and, hopefully, for the better.

Family Knows No Bounds: The Future of Adoption

As awareness and understanding of adoption continue to grow, adopting is becoming more and more mainstream. People are now beginning to see how important adopting is and how making it better benefits everyone. Perhaps there will soon be a world where adoption is non-existent, but the world is now, and adopting remains quite an important institution.
